Drug Uses
Imitrex Nasal Spray is
indicated for the acute
treatment of migraine attacks
with or without aura in adults.
Imitrex Nasal Spray is not
intended for the prophylactic
therapy of migraine or for use
in the management of hemiplegic
or basilar migraine. Safety and
effectiveness of Imitrex Nasal
Spray have not been established
for cluster headache, which is
present in an older,
predominantly male population.
How
Taken
For Imitrex Nasal Spray
nasal, gently blow your nose to
clear any mucous. Insert the tip
about 1 cm (one-half inch) into
the nostril, pointing it
straight up into the nasal
canal. Block your other nostril
and keep your head upright. Pump
and sniff gently at the same
time. Try not to sneeze or blow
your nose just after using the
spray. If your headache is
relieved, but then returns, you
can use a second dose 2 hours
after the first dose. Do not use
more than 2 doses in 24 hours.
Warnings/Precautions
Tell your doctor if you have:
heart disease, coronary artery
disease, high blood pressure,
stroke, kidney disease, liver
disease, allergies (especially
drug allergies). There have been
rare reports of those with sulfa
drug allergies having allergic
reactions to Imitrex. Consult
your doctor or pharmacist. Since
Imitrex may cause drowsiness,
use caution operating machinery
or engaging in activities
requiring alertness and avoid
alcohol because it may increase
drowsiness/dizziness effects.
The manufacturer does not
recommend use of Imitrex in the
elderly, because they may be
more sensitive to its side
effects. Imitrex should be used
during pregnancy only when
clearly needed. Discuss the
risks and the benefits with your
doctor. Imitrex is excreted into
breast milk. The effects on
nursing infants are unknown at
this time. Consult your doctor
before breast-feeding.
Missed Dose
Take Imitrex only when a
migraine attack occurs as
directed. This is not taken
routinely. Never "double-up" the
dose.
Possible Side Effects
Imitrex may initially cause
flushing, dizziness, weakness,
nausea, drowsiness, stiffness,
or feelings of tingling, heat,
fatigue. If any of these effects
continue or become bothersome,
inform your doctor. In the
unlikely event you have an
allergic reaction to this drug,
seek immediate medical
attention. Symptoms of an
allergic reaction include: rash,
itching, swelling, dizziness,
trouble breathing. If you notice
other effects not listed above,
contact your doctor or
pharmacist.
Storage
Store between 36° and 86°F
(2° and 30°C). Protect from
light.
Overdose
If overdose is suspected,
contact your local poison
control center or emergency room
immediately. Symptoms of
overdose may include tremor,
chest pain, slowed breathing,
and seizures.

Do not use Imitrex Nasal
Spray without first talking to
your doctor if the headache you
are experiencing is not like
other migraines that you have
had. Never take more of this
medication than is prescribed by
your doctor. If your symptoms
are not being treated, contact
your doctor. Imitrex Nasal Spray
may cause dizziness or
drowsiness. Use caution when
driving, operating machinery, or
performing other hazardous
activities until you can
evaluate the effects of the
medication.
